The "55" was the club where Peter Decuypere (Fuse, Fill Collins Club, I love Techno) started his career in night life. The club was mainly known for it’s extravagant visitors and strict door policy. The initial musical direction to hit the club, was New Wave. Although further fifty-five later evolved into Electro, New Beat, Acid and House, but remained one Friday per month reserved for New Wave. Among the residents Jan Vanneste (now working with record label NEWS) was to be found. Other big names behind the decks of fifty-five were Danny Rampling and Mo & Benoelie (indeed, The Glimmers). Fifty-five was also the place where the gay club La Démence emerged in 1991 (unconfirmed fact). Fifty-five belongs in a row, alongside AB (Antwerp), Gaite (Brussels), Skyline (in Tournai) and Boccaccio (Destelbergen), of clubs that introduced house culture. But one day the city reported that they would close the club for two years. Decuypere went to court, won, but left his legendary “55” behind to make a new start in Brussels.
